The Five Daily Prayers: Timings, Meaning & Sunnah Etiquettes

Salah (الصلاة) is the foundational pillar connecting creation to the Creator five times daily. Explore the celestial markers governing each prayer window, their profound spiritual dimensions, and authentic prophetic practices.

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا

"Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times." [Surah An-Nisa 4:103]

1. Fajr (صلاة الفجر) — The Dawn Prayer

Dawn until Sunrise • 2 Rak'ahs Fard
Celestial Dawn

Astronomical Demarcation:

Fajr begins at Subh Sadiq (True Dawn), which occurs when a horizontal band of white light spreads across the eastern horizon while the sun is still below the horizon (typically between 15° and 19.5° solar depression). It is distinguished from Subh Kadhib (False Dawn), a vertical pillar of light resembling a wolf's tail (zodiacal light) that quickly fades back into darkness. Fajr concludes the moment the upper limb of the solar disc crests the horizon (Sunrise).

Spiritual Dimension:

Awakening before creation awakens constitutes a total dedication of the soul's first conscious moments to Allah. The recitation of the Quran at Fajr is uniquely witnessed by angels: "Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed" [Surah Al-Isra 17:78]. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever performs the two cool prayers (Asr and Fajr) will enter Paradise." [Sahih al-Bukhari 574].

Sunnah Etiquettes:

  • Praying the 2 Sunnah rak'ahs prior to the Fard prayer. The Prophet ﷺ stated: "The two rak'ahs before Fajr are better than this world and everything in it." [Sahih Muslim 725].
  • Reciting Surah Al-Kafirun in the first Sunnah rak'ah and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second.
  • Avoiding delaying until the horizon glows yellowish-red (Isfar) near sunrise without valid excuse.

2. Dhuhr (صلاة الظهر) — The Midday Prayer

Post-Zenith until Asr • 4 Rak'ahs Fard
Solar Meridian

Astronomical Demarcation:

Dhuhr begins immediately after Zawaal—the exact astronomical moment when the sun traverses the local celestial meridian (Solar Noon) and begins its decline toward the west. It lasts until the entry of Asr time.

Spiritual Dimension:

Dhuhr arrives at the zenith of the worldly workday, when commerce, labor, and domestic responsibilities are most intense. Halting secular activities at noon to prostrate reminds the believer that sustenance (Rizq) originates solely from the Creator, realigning human priorities amidst worldly distractions.

Sunnah Etiquettes:

  • Praying 4 Sunnah rak'ahs before Dhuhr and 2 Sunnah rak'ahs after [Jami' at-Tirmidhi 414].
  • In extremely hot weather, it is Sunnah to delay the Dhuhr prayer slightly until the blistering heat cools: "When the heat becomes severe, delay the prayer until it cools down, for the severity of heat is from the exhalation of Hell." [Sahih al-Bukhari 536].

3. Asr (صلاة العصر) — The Afternoon Prayer

Late Afternoon until Sunset • 4 Rak'ahs Fard
Al-Salat Al-Wusta

Astronomical Demarcation:

Asr begins according to the majority of jurists (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali) when an object's shadow equals its height plus the shadow length at noon. In the Hanafi juristic school, it commences when the shadow equals twice the object's height plus the noon shadow. Asr ends when the sun completely sets below the horizon.

Spiritual Dimension:

Asr is identified by classical commentators as Al-Salat Al-Wusta (The Middle Prayer), explicitly singled out in the Holy Quran: "Guard strictly your prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah with devotion." [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:238]. It is the hour when the day and night angelic watchers assemble and ascend with the servant's deeds.

Sunnah Etiquettes:

  • Strict avoidance of procrastinating Asr until the sun turns dim and yellow: the Prophet ﷺ warned that delaying Asr to the last moments is the mark of a hypocrite who pecks the ground four times [Sahih Muslim 622].
  • Praying 4 optional rak'ahs before Asr brings divine mercy: "May Allah have mercy on the person who prays four rak'ahs before Asr." [Jami' at-Tirmidhi 430].

4. Maghrib (صلاة المغرب) — The Sunset Prayer

Sunset until Twilight Disappears • 3 Rak'ahs Fard
Solar Sunset

Astronomical Demarcation:

Maghrib begins the precise second the upper edge of the solar disc disappears entirely beneath the horizon. It lasts until the disappearance of Shafaq (the evening twilight glow) from the western sky.

Spiritual Dimension:

The conclusion of daylight reminds believers of the transience of worldly life. Maghrib represents an immediate expression of gratefulness for the blessings granted during the day and sets a contemplative spiritual tone for the night.

Sunnah Etiquettes:

  • Hastening to offer Maghrib early in its window: "My community will continue to be upon good as long as they do not delay Maghrib until the stars intertwine." [Sunan Abi Dawud 418].
  • Performing 2 Sunnah Mu'akkadah rak'ahs immediately following the Fard prayer.

5. Isha (صلاة العشاء) — The Night Prayer

Twilight End until Islamic Midnight • 4 Rak'ahs Fard
Nightfall

Astronomical Demarcation:

Isha enters when total celestial darkness sets in following the extinction of the red/white evening twilight (typically 15° to 19.5° solar depression). Its preferred time extends up to Islamic Midnight (Nisf al-Layl), which is calculated as the exact midpoint between Maghrib (sunset) and Fajr (true dawn).

Spiritual Dimension:

Closing the active day with worship ensures the final written entry in the believer's diurnal register is humble submission before Allah. Praying Isha in congregation carries immense reward: "Whoever attends the Isha prayer in congregation, it is as if he stood in prayer for half of the night." [Sahih Muslim 656].

Sunnah Etiquettes:

  • Praying 2 Sunnah rak'ahs following Isha.
  • Concluding the night's prayers with the odd-numbered Witr prayer (1, 3, or more rak'ahs).
  • Avoiding unnecessary secular conversation, entertainment, or screen time after Isha, retiring to sleep with pure intentions.

Qiyam al-Layl (Tahajjud) — The Night Vigil

The Final Third of the Night

The pinnacle of personal devotional closeness is achieved during Tahajjud. SalatNow computes the Last Third of the Night automatically. During this window, divine mercy descends:

"Our Lord, the Blessed and Exalted, descends every night to the lowest heaven when the final third of the night remains, saying: 'Who is calling upon Me that I may answer him? Who is asking of Me that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him?'" [Sahih al-Bukhari 1145]

Universal Sunnah Pillars of Khushu' (Devotion)

Meticulous Purification (Wudu)

Performing thorough ablution without water wastage cleanses spiritual sins alongside physical grime, preparing body and mind for sacred presence.

Precision in Qibla Orientation

Aligning toward the Holy Kaaba unifies global believers in common direction, symbolising the unicity of the worship of Allah (Tawhid).

Attentive Listening to the Adhan

Repeating the words of the caller to prayer and reciting the authentic Wasilah supplication guarantees the intercession of the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of Judgment.

Post-Salah Remembrance (Adhkar)

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi, Astaghfirullah (3x), SubhanAllah (33x), Alhamdulillah (33x), and Allahu Akbar (33x) completes and elevates the prayer.
